Mamalilikulla First Nation
The Mamalilikulla Guardian Program monitors activities within the lands and waters in the territories, carries out ecological and marine health research as part of the Nations’ marine plan, monitors crab, prawn and commercial clam harvesting, monitors the Loxiwe clam garden, monitors wildlife, and does public communication and outreach. During the summer months they are monitoring recreation and development activities, including commercial over-fishing, fish farming, oil spills, high marine traffic volume and logging impacts.
The Mamalilikulla First Nation is based on northern Vancouver Island, with an administrative office in Campbell River, BC. The Mamalilikulla Guardians monitor their territory, situated at the mouth of Knight Inlet and the western section of the Broughton Archipelago, mainly on ‘Mimkwamlis (Village Island). The goal of the program is to reassume and maintain our traditional stewardship responsibilities in our territories and to re-establish and enhance public respect for our marine resources and environment. The Mamalilikulla Guardians are no longer just the ‘eyes and ears’ of the Nation, but have increased their abilities to take on their ancestral responsibility of taking care of the lands, waters, wildlife and food sources for future generations.
