Together is Better - The Central Coast Indigenous Resource Alliance
The Heiltsuk, Kitasoo/Xai’Xais, Nuxalk and Wuikinuxv Nations realized that they could better reach their goals of ensuring healthy and balanced ecosystems, healthy local economies, and healthy communities by working together. In March 2010, the four Nations entered into a formal relationship and signed a formal declaration that established the Central Coast Indigenous Resource Alliance (CCIRA).
One strength of this partnership lies in the sub-regional scale of the four Nations’ territories. This makes for manageable and effective decision making and strategic work. The Nations also share common issues and challenges.
CCIRA has worked to develop comprehensive and aligned marine use plans for the Central Coast region. It is also focuses on a range of issues such as land use planning, science/research coordination, fisheries management, crab management, bear research, and other initiatives. Learn more here.
